Helping Babies Breathe
Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2020. The initiative teaches healthcare workers the initial steps of resuscitation to save babies who struggle to breathe at birth. HBB is part of Helping Babies Survive, an initiative of the American Academy of Pediatrics developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization.
Sherri Bucher, PhD, associate research professor of pediatrics at IU School of Medicine, is an international mentor for Helping Babies Survive, as well as the country mentor for Kenya. More than 850,000 health workers have been trained with these lifesaving skills in more than 150 countries. Bucher and the Helping Babies Breathe team have made ambitious goals for the future, including supporting the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal to reduce the global rate of newborn mortality to 12 deaths per 1,000 by 2030. According to the World Health Organization, the global rate of newborn mortality was 29 deaths per 1,000 in 2017.
