AMPATH Palliative Care/Supportive Oncology
Defining supportive oncology for lower and middle income countries: capitalizing on telecommunication to maximize cancer treatment compliance through optimal symptom management
This program is developing the first clinically based palliative care program in Kenya by training the next generation of Supportive Oncology specialists, improving medical literacy of patients and health care personnel and piloting a symptom assessment and treatment program for patients with advanced breast cancer. This program will lead to a self-sustaining improvement in cancer care in LMICs and serve as a model for other cancer programs.
The three initiatives involved with this program are:
- Innovative training in palliative care with a focus on oncology
- Improving symptom management outside tertiary care centers
- Optimized symptom management protocols for patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer
