ENLACE Virtual Ethics of Global Health Volunteerism and Online Spanish Elective
Participation in short-term global health training/service programs has the potential to generate unique ethical dilemmas for which medical students/residents and host communities are often ill-prepared. As the number of medical students traveling to resource-limited countries steadily increases, so too does the demand for better preparing these individuals for the ethical issues and challenges of short-term global health volunteerism.
In this course, students study the ethics of global health volunteerism through numerous topics from a variety of perspectives and complete 40 hours of one-on-one Spanish classes with personalized lessons taught by a native-Spanish speaker through real-time online video conferencing.
This course is an online alternative opportunity to the ENLACE Global Health Elective, allowing students the opportunity to seriously engage in an important global health issue and dedicate time to learning/improving Spanish skills when international travel is not a viable option. Open to any level of Spanish speakers– from beginners to advanced.

“I have gained a much deeper appreciation for what it means to participate in global health. I had often contemplated participating in one of the many programs that I have seen advertised, but I had not given too much thought to the ethical practices done by each. I am very glad that I took this class when I did, it has reinforced my desire to participate in Global Health Initiatives throughout my practice and has given me the tools to decide where to spend my time and energy. “ --Austin Fonseca, 2024 participant
