The Consortium of Universities for Global Health wishes to acknowledge the accomplishments and commitment of outstanding individuals who contribute to the advancement of global health worldwide. CUGH has three awards that will be presented at its annual Global Health Conference. Only CUGH members may submit a nomination. However, members and non-members may be nominated.
Award Categories:
- CUGH Distinguished Leadership Award: Award criteria – a candidate must have: Demonstrated a long-term, profound commitment to global health; Made an exceptional contribution to improving global health, through interdisciplinary activities across research, education, advocacy and/or service; Demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in her/his field resulting in significant, lasting benefits for global health outcomes particularly for the world’s poor; Inspired excellence among peers and staff and is well-respected in the global health community nationally and internationally; and Played a pivotal role in advocating for, implementing or advancing global health policies and/or programs that improve the health of people and the planet.
- CUGH's Dr. Thomas Hall-Dr. Nelson Sewankambo Mid-Career Leadership Award: Nominees must be between the ages of 30 years and 50 years before December 31st, 2025. Open to individuals working within and outside academia. a candidate must have: Demonstrated a proven commitment and consistent record of outstanding achievement in one or more of the areas of global health education, research, advocacy, and/or service; Worked to reduce health disparities, particularly within low-income communities; Established collaborations with colleagues in resource-poor settings; Played an important role in advocating for, implementing, or advancing global health policies and/or programs that improve the health of people and the planet; Demonstrated strong leadership abilities.
- CUGH's Dr. Wasserheit Young Leader Award: Be under the age of 30 the year the award is given (eg: as of December 31, 2025, for 2025 award). Open to individuals working within and outside academia. a candidate must: Possess a record of outstanding achievement in one or more of the areas of education, research, advocacy, and/or service, particularly targeting the reduction of health disparities; Have collaborated with colleagues in resource-poor settings to improve global health outcomes for the vulnerable or the poor. Have demonstrated strong leadership abilities.
ANVAR AND PARI VELJI/CUGH AWARDS FOR GLOBAL HEALTH EXCELLENCE

The Velji Family Foundation annually celebrates global health education, research and service by honoring individuals and projects that demonstrate committed, creative approaches to serving underserved populations. Awardees receive: Recognition at the 2025 CUGH Conference; Waived conference registration; Recognition certificate; USD $600 to support ongoing global health activities.
Membership Requirements: CUGH membership is not required to submit a nomination, however 4 of the 5 awards must be awarded to a CUGH member.
Award Categories:
- Velji Student Leader in Global Health: This award honors a trainee who has created a program/innovative product that is having a positive impact on the well-being of people in low-income settings or the environment. Nominees must be a CUGH member, or affiliated with a CUGH member institution.
- Velji Faculty Leader in Global Health Innovation*: This award honors a faculty member who has implemented/developed an innovation that is having a positive impact on the well-being of people in low-income settings or the environment. *Must have been implemented within the last 5 years. Nominees must be a CUGH member, or affiliated with a CUGH member institution.
- Velji Global Health Award for Teaching Excellence: This award honors a faculty member who has been an outstanding teacher and who has had a particularly significant impact on the lives of those living in low resources settings. Nominees must be a CUGH member, or affiliated with a CUGH member institution.
- Velji Young African Leader Award: This award honors an individual who will be: under 35 years of age on December 31, 2023, born in an African nation, and is currently attending/working in an institution in Africa. The winner has shown exceptional ability and commitment to improving the wellbeing of individuals in low income settings. This award is open to all - CUGH membership is not required.
- Velji Planetary Health/One Health Innovation Award: This award will recognize individuals, groups, or communities that have demonstrated: Innovative approaches leading to balance of environment, biosphere, and human health; Novel ideas and replicable solutions to preserve ecological sensitive environment conducive to human animal health and ecology; Interdisciplinary projects preferably integrating threatened communities internationally; Solutions and ideas that have been cost-effective and can be easily replicated with wise use of human resources; Nominees must be a CUGH member, or affiliated with a CUGH member institution.

Dr. James G. Hakim (1954-2021) was an acclaimed researcher and professor and a profoundly important leader in advancing medical research and education in Africa. He was the Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare, a founding member of AFREhealth, a member and esteemed partner to CUGH, and a longstanding, prominent grantee of the Fogarty International Center.
To celebrate the tremendous scientific and public health accomplishments that mark the prolific career of Dr. Hakim and memorialize the loss of this great humanitarian, we are establishing an award in his name.

Award: Waived registration fee at the CUGH annual meeting; Travel support; Recognition at the meeting
Eligibility: The award will be given to a health field trainee or early-career health professional who is: Currently enrolled in a degree-granting educational program from an accredited African university, OR no more than five years from receiving a terminal degree (at the time of abstract submission); AND is a citizen of an African country; AND has a primary professional affiliation with an Africa-based institution.
Selection: The main selection criterion will be the highest score on an abstract submitted for the CUGH annual meeting as judged routinely by the annual meeting Scientific Committee, usually at least three months before the annual meeting, which will allow time to organize sponsored travel. A panel of one representative each from AFREhealth, CUGH, and FIC will confirm the selectee’s eligibility and make the final selection. Note: In the event of a tie, more than one award may be given, pending availability of funds. Additional criteria may be used to make a final award, e.g., potential professional impact of the awardee, other concurrent CUGH awards, and diversity vis a vis other awardees.
CUGH Global Health Video Competition

Effective communication is vital to our ability to impact the pressing challenges the world is facing. Conveying messages visually is a powerful way to achieve this. In this spirit, we are pleased to announce that CUGH’s 12th annual Global Health Video Competition is now open to receive short video submissions in two categories: Global Health Challenges or High Impact Solutions.
Anyone can submit a short (under 5 min. video, 1 per individual). We strongly encourage submissions from individuals working in low resource settings. Submissions from organizations are ineligible.
There will be a winner and two honorable mentions in each submission category. All six videos from the winners and honorable mentions will be featured at the conference, on the CUGH website, and newsletter.
The top submission in each category will receive one (1) free registration to the conference.
- Global Health Challenges - illustrates a threat that impacts human or environmental wellbeing that may receive little attention
- High Impact Programs – showcases a high impact program/initiative that can improve human wellbeing or environmental outcomes
Low Income or Lower-Middle Income Country Bursaries

CUGH is happy to announce that abstract presenters from Low Income, or Lower-Middle Income Countries (LLMIC) have the opportunity to be considered for an LLMIC Travel Scholarship for the 2025 CUGH Conference. Bursary Package; 1 waived registration for the CUGH 2025 Conference; Hotel Stay (4 nights) from Feb 19-Feb 23, 2025; $500 Travel Stipend.
To Qualify for Consideration: By August 31st, 2024, submit an abstract for oral or poster Presentation where they are listed as the lead presenter. On the Abstract Submission Form, “Opt in” for consideration for the LLMIC Bursary. Be a citizen of a low income country (LIC) or lower-middle income country (LMIC) who was working and living in a LIC/LMIC, as of August 31st, 2024. CUGH uses the World Bank definition of LIC and LMIC.
The CUGH Global Health Student Poster Competition
Submission Deadline: August 31, 2024
CUGH will award $500 to the 8 winning poster presentations - one award for each track. Those who wish to compete must opt-in during abstract submission to compete.
Poster competition is open to abstracts addressing a project or activity conducted by an individual(s) with student status during the project period. The project, program, activity to be presented must be completed by June 30th, 2024.
