What is Research Translation and Why is it Important?
Health research does not naturally make its way into policy and practice. In fact, research can take quite a long time to be integrated into practice – estimates vary between 14 years, 17 years, or even as high as 25 years.
First year IU School of Medicine students Julia Amstutz and Kylie Wertz participated in the Indiana University Medical Student Program for Research and Scholarship (IMPRS) this summer. With mentorship from Debra Litzelman, MD, director of education for the IU Center for Global Health Equity (IUCGHE) and Michael Scanlon, IUCGHE assistant director of research, the students worked on a health policy project funded by the Indiana Department of Health focused on reimbursement of community health workers in Indiana.
IU Graduate’s Fogarty Project Focuses on the Surgical Care Cascade
Dr. Helen Li, a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine and now a surgical resident at Washington University in St. Louis, was selected for the 2023-24 Fogarty International Center’s Global Health Fellows and Scholars Program, now called Launching Future Leaders in Global Health (LAUNCH) Research Training Program. Her research project is entitled “Management of Ventral Hernias through the Surgical ‘Cascade’ at a Kenyan National Referral Hospital: A longitudinal, mixed-methods study.”
Brater Family Scholarship Available for Global Health Rotations
The Brater Family Scholarship funds up to $5,300 for travel expenses, lodging and program costs to travel to low-income countries, particularly sub-Saharan Africa and the AMPATH Kenya program.
Abigail Brinkman Scholarship for Global Health Rotation in Belize Available
The Abigail Brinkman Scholarship provides funds to support a fourth-year student traveling to a healthcare center in Belize to do an international clinical medical elective. Funds can be used to defray travel expenses, lodging and program costs while on site.
