The IU Center for Global Health Equity and AMPATH join communities in Indiana and around the world in celebrating the life of philanthropist and civic leader James T. Morris who passed away on July 12.
Mr. Morris, a graduate of Indiana University and past chair of the IU Board of Trustees, spent six decades in public service including leadership positions with the United Nations World Food Program, Lilly Endowment, Indianapolis Water Company, Indianapolis Mayor Richard Lugar and most recently with Pacers Sports and Entertainment.
While leading the World Food Programme from 2002-2007, Mr. Morris played a key role in growing AMPATH’s agriculture and food programs for people living with HIV and other illnesses in western Kenya. He remained a friend and advocate for AMPATH throughout his life describing it as “one of the most inspiring examples of humanitarian partnership I’ve ever seen.”
“We are honored and fortunate to have Jim and Jackie Morris as part of the AMPATH and IU family,” said Adrian Gardner, MD, MPH, director of the IU Center for Global Health Equity. “Jim’s love and passion for improving Indiana and Indianapolis was rivaled only by his passion for improving the lives of children around the world.”
At a recent gathering for AMPATH supporters at his home in Indianapolis, Mr. Morris said, “My faith tells me that God loves the kids in downtown Indianapolis just like he loves the kids in Kenya and it’s our job to keep our arms around all of them and to be as generous and thoughtful and caring as we can, contingent on what we have to work with.”
“Jim Morris would never miss an opportunity to share his pride in Indiana University and his gratitude for the good work we are doing around the world,” said Dean Jay L. Hess, MD, PhD, MHSA, IU School of Medicine. “His humility, generosity, and love for humanity set the example for all of us.”
We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Jackie and the rest of his beloved family.
