The IU Center for Global Health is accepting applications for the Summer 2021 Slemenda Scholars Program. Selected rising second-year IUSM students will complete an 8-10 week global health experience with AMPATH. AMPATH, or the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare, is a partnership between Kenyan and North American universities to build holistic, sustainable health in Kenya and around the world.
During the program, Slemenda Scholars typically travel to Eldoret, Kenya and experience AMPATH by participating in rounds, collaborating on field projects and working alongside Moi University medical students. Scholars participate in the IMPRS poster presentation at the end of their experience, as well as write blog posts and provide updates to AMPATH and IU School of Medicine websites. Associated travel costs are covered by the IU Center for Global Health, and scholars receive a $1,000 stipend upon completion of the program requirements.
We are hopeful that the scholars will be able to complete their experience in Kenya, but there is a possibility that it will be completed in Indianapolis depending on COVID-19 conditions near the anticipated start date. In this case, students will spend time learning about AMPATH and working on a global health project with Center for Global Health faculty.
To apply, please email a personal statement and CV to Victoria Eder by January 2, 2021. The selection process will include review of submitted materials and a virtual interview. Students may apply to IMPRS simultaneously if they desire. Slemenda Scholars will be chosen before IMPRS assignments are finalized.
